To celebrate students in the top 10 percent of their graduating class, the school hosted the annual Honor Grad Breakfast on Wed., Mar. 6 at the Lone Star Convention Center.
“I have had to balance my work with other things, like my friends and all of the clubs I’m in, the past four years,” senior Dallas Freed said. “Sometimes it’s been hard, and I have to make sacrifices when it comes to both, but I feel like it has paid off after keeping up my grades after all of these years.”
During the breakfast, students were recognized for achieving awards in UIL. Each student also received an honor medallion along with honor cords, which will be worn at the graduation ceremony.
“It was nice to be recognized for all the hard work and time I have put in over the past four years,” senior Nikki Hammond said.
For breakfast, MHS culinary students served breakfast tacos from Mckenzie’s Barbeque. Attendees could also grab a cup of coffee, which was donated from Starbucks.
“The food was pretty good,” Freed said. “All of the students did a great job.”
For the first year, the jazz band performed music while students and their families socialized and ate.
“I loved the addition of the jazz band,” senior Jordan Schier said. “It created such a nice atmosphere.”
Schier said her favorite part about the breakfast was spending time with peers and being recognized for all of their hard work.
“My favorite part of the breakfast was when they were calling out UIL awards because I was in the restroom when I heard my name called,” Freed said. “I had to run out and rush in front of everyone to claim my award.”
Senior and valedictorian Elliot Sims said paying attention in class and understanding the lesson is the most important part to earn a spot in the top 10 percent of the class.
“I was proud when I got recognized,” Sims said.
