When students returned from winter break, they saw that the old library had been replaced by a new and improved Academic Success Center. The center includes lots of seating, a coffee bar and computers accessible to students.
“It’s a great learning environment and a great socializing environment,” library aide Mrs. Joan Parker said.
The new name of what used to be the library, the Academic Success Center, was chosen by students in a survey earlier in the year. The suggestion that came in second place was “The Learning Commons.”
“Academic Success Center, that will be known, with our letters, ASC,” Parker said.
Though the center was originally projected to open earlier in the year, College and Career Counselor Mrs. Stacy LaBruyere said that the construction of the ASC “went smoothly.”
“We were hoping to be in in November, but hey, January 8th is no slouch!” Parker said. “We are thrilled to death.”
To create the design of the center, the school turned to “Library Ambassadors,” a few students from each grade. Among their other responsibilities, the Library Ambassadors were given a budget to choose and purchase books to stock the new library’s shelves. The Ambassadors selected the genres of the books based on the results of the aforementioned survey.
“The books that you see on the floor are the books that the student body wanted,” Parker said.
As previously mentioned, the Academic Success Center will also include a coffee bar. Water, cups, and Keurig coffee makers will be provided for use free of charge, but it will be up to the students to bring their own K-Cups or tea bags.
“We can’t sell [coffee] or charge, but you can bring yours,” Parker said.
LaBruyere expressed her excitement for the future of the Academic Success Center.
“I am most excited about this area being the heart of our campus!” LaBruyere said. “Just within the 1st week of its grand opening, it has been filled with students and staff. I love that the front entrance is open. It gives off a positive and welcoming vibe!”
